To help you choose a therapist who matches your needs, we asked our staff to answer a few questions about massage styles. Here Travis Jonquil talks about his approach to healing. But first, a brief bio.
Travis Jonquil’s massage is defined by intuition and strength. He blends elements of Swedish, deep tissue massage, myofascial release, Shiatsu, and trigger point therapy. Travis originally studied at the Oregon School of Massage, and has been a team member at Body Aware since 2015. He is currently training in Egoscue, a postural fitness program that will give him additional tools for helping clients bring the musculoskeletal system back into alignment. In addition, he has years of experience with sports massage and treating back pain caused by desk work. While Travis is devoted to alleviating pain, he also loves the opportunity to create a sense of peace and relaxation.
A Q&A with Portland massage therapist Travis Jonquil
What was your favorite aspect of studying massage?
I loved learning all the muscles and how they work together and propel the body. I especially loved learning shiatsu, also known as anma and acupressure. Shiatsu is like a dance. It flows in a pattern and rhythm around the body. It’s such a beautiful and profound form of massage. It’s graceful and methodical, and it addresses so many conditions. The original name of anma means, “to make peaceful through touch.”
What are your favorite aspects of being a massage therapist?
Seeing people walk out of my office in less pain than they were when they came in. I have the opportunity to make a positive difference in my client’s lives. Furthermore, I have the opportunity to serve my community. For me, massage is a practice of gratitude.
What can clients expect from a session?
Deep relaxation. My goal is to work structurally and intuitively. In the case of treating chronic pain and over-use injuries, I aim to ride the therapeutic edge: that place where real release of tension is felt. It’s deeply relaxing, yet highly effective. I listen closely to the body, feeling for signals to hold or move on, or go deeper.
